Origins ’09 excitement!

The Tallahassee Democrat has a feature article in their Living section about the big Origins ’09 event.

Among the Great Thinkers coming to FSU are (drum roll, please):

— Two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author and evolutionary biologist E.O. Wilson;
— Harvard physicist and cosmologist Lisa Randall;
— Anthropologist Don Johanson, (co-finder of “Lucy,” one of the most famous fossils ever);
— Oxford historian Peter Harrison.

The folks from “Talk of the Nation: Science Friday” will be there, too.

“The biggest issue in science today is restoring science to its rightful place and giving it the respect it used to have. It’s become too political.”

Here’s a schedule of events in the newspaper. There’s even a cool-sounding book fair:

The idea of a book fair can sound staid even to voracious readers. Truth be told, lots of writers aren’t all that thrilled with the idea of a book fair, either.

Which is why when “Origins ’09” organizers at FSU dreamed up a book fair, they thought they’d do things differently. When it gets going Saturday afternoon on Kleman Plaza, the “Origins Book Fair” will feature 20 Florida writers going head-to-head in 5-minute, rapid-fire mini-shows.

And, of course, here is the link to the Origins ’09 website.

    One I don’t want to miss is Sean B Carroll, author of “Endless Forms Most Beautiful” and “The Making of the Fittest”! He makes Evo-Devo come alive in a way I haven’t seen before. He’s featured prominently on the linked schedule, talking on Thursday. It’s a long drive for me, but I’m there.
