Push to increase science degrees falls flat

A group of prominent business groups had sounded the alarm a few years ago about the U.S. falling behind other countries in science, technology, engineering and math fields. So, there was a push to increase bachelor’s degrees in those fields, with a goal of doubling such degrees in about 15 years. Now about six years into the effort, the goal is looking a bit out of reach.

In an update to be published Tuesday, the group reports the number of degrees in those fields rose slightly earlier in the decade, citing figures from the years after 2001 that have become available since the first report was published. But the number of degrees has since flattened out at around 225,000 per year.

Here is the “Tapping America’s Potential” website. And here is a report on Florida, but take note that the state report is from 2006.

My recent undergrad experience: many students who were working toward a science degree were pre-med/pre-health/pre-vet, etc. USF even created this BS degree (yes, I mean bachelor’s AND bull shit) called BMS- bio medical science. It is easier than majoring in bio, chem, micro, etc.

I think I’m in favor of that GE. (If I’m understanding your comment correctly)

If they had that 20+ years ago- and it was a standard in universities- then a certain SB member couldn’t claim she had a degree in biology when it’s really in respiratory therapy.

I have no issue with wanting to increase science degrees, and I have no issues with pre-med/health students. I just didn’t like the fact that they made a major intended for those students that was easier than majoring in bio, chem, etc.

It’s got a different designation though, right?

  5. Green Earth says:

The major is biomedical science, BMS. It’s fine that they wanted to create a major for pre-med/health students, but it was made “easier” by having fewer/easier elective requirements, etc.
