Climate Change

I have to admit that when it comes to the subject of climate change/ global warming I have a lot to learn. Like most of us, my knowledge has been limited to the media and a few articles in science magazines. Well all that is about to change. I have just enrolled in a course on Coursera, provided by the University of British Columbia entitled, “Climate Literacy”, the 10 week course starts on May 20th  It covers a wide range of climate issues and I would encourage any one that has a interest in this topic to sign up.

Thanks for pointing the course out, Jonathan. I’ve signed up. Interestingly, right before seeing your post I read this story: Survey finds majority of pastors don’t believe in global warming

Sorry guys I should have mentioned the fact that the course is FREE and that you receive a certificate of completion. The out-line of the course is as follows

“Climate Literacy tackles the scientific and socio-political dimensions of climate change. This course introduces the basics of the climate system, models and predictions, human and natural impacts, mitigative and adaptive responses, and the evolution of climate policy.”

Thanks for the info Chris. But I never base my opinions on singularities, but rather on the consensus of scientific evidence. I will post my opinions on this site at the conclusion of my course.

Jonathan, I would sure agree with you on that.

    Chris,

I don’t think there is much disagreement that the earth is warming up. To what extent, how quickly and if it is anthropomorphic, that’s what I’m ready to learn about.

  8. Chris says:

    Jonathan,

I read somewhere that Antarctica is growing by a little over one percent in ice annually, and the northern ice is shrinking by over five percent annually. It does appear the earth is warming, According to the book of Revelation one of the final judgements could be called global warming.
Revelation 16:8-9 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

  9. Jonathan Smith says:

    Chris,
The National Snow and Ice Center (NSIDC) reports the sea ice extent bottomed out at 1.32 million square miles, about 293,000 square miles below the prior 2007 record. Arctic sea ice extent has been monitored by satellite since 1979. That’s around a 27% loss.
As far as the connection to the book of Revelation, I would have to agree with Thomas Jefferson who wrote that he considered it as “merely the ravings of a maniac, no more worthy nor capable of explanation than the incoherence’s of our own nightly dreams”

  10. Chris says:

    Jonathan,
Looks like things are warming up.
After Jefferson chopped up a few bibles and rearranged a little of the content to fit some of his humanist views, I would imagine hacking into the book of Revelation would be a real bummer. But today he would have had an even rougher time trying to water down the scripture. Fitting his opinion and suggesting coincidence in front of the every growing pile fulfilled biblical predictions would be a hard sell to anyone paying attention.

While not a substitute for horse’s mouth science, the youtube user “greenman3610” is a science advocate with an excellent series of videos on the science of climate change. I do think it would be a good approximation of a literacy course.
