The Seminole Community College Planetarium is proud to premiere a brand-new full-dome video presentation, “Sol”, on June 6, 2009, with a first showing at 8:30 p.m. and a second showing at 9:30 p.m. Burning steadily for the past five billion years, the Sun has helped make life on planet Earth possible. As an object of intense study and reverence, the Sun has heavily influenced the lives and beliefs of civilizations throughout human history. “Sol” presents a stunning exploration of our nearest star, what powers it deep within the core, and what the future holds for the Sun?and for us.
To help mark this special occasion, the Planetarium, in concert with the Central Florida Astronomical Society, invites the community to join them prior to the world premiere for a solar observing event outside the Planetarium, starting at 6 p.m. Specially-equipped telescopes from the Planetarium and CFAS members will safely show the ever-changing face of our cosmic neighbor, while tables will be set up for solar-themed arts and crafts. A special presentation, titled “Harnessing the Power of the Sun,” will be presented by CFAS representatives Jason Higley and Randy Pruitt in the Planetarium at 7 p.m. Additionally, visitors will be able to create their very own solar observing instrument!
Admission to the solar observing event and solar power presentation is free of charge, but the presentations of “Sol” at 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. will cost $6 for adults, $4 for students K-12 and adults over 55, and are free to children under 5. SCC students, faculty, and staff are admitted free of charge with a valid SCC identification card.
