13-year-old wins award

13-year-old Ashley Hunt of Longwood snagged $500 and a trip to the American Museum of Natural History in New York for her research and an essay on algae in the Wekiva River. Outstanding job, Ashley!

Ashley began brainstorming for ideas for her essay in November.She read an article on OrlandoSentinel.com that suggested algae might be harming some of the plants and animals in the Wekiva River.

She became intrigued and wanted to know more about the health of the river.
