What interests me about this story? Evolution, of course.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When teachers earned workplace protections in the early 20th century, tenure was intended as a shield against overbearing parents and heavy-handed school boards.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters say the need remains. Just imagine, they say, what could happen to tenure-less science teachers in stretches of Florida where evolution is ridiculed.<\/p>\n<p>But critics say tenure&#8217;s shield is too often extended to teachers who don&#8217;t deserve it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8212; Budget slashing is hitting everyone hard. Science class field trips <a href=\"http:\/\/news-press.com\/article\/20090328\/NEWS0104\/903280380\">are no exception<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s sad,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I just had a child tell me, &#8216;Mrs. Franta, this is a glorious day.&#8217; This kind of experience can affect students the rest of their lives. It makes them aware of their environment. It makes them want to care for it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8212; A 14-year-old student laments the loss of the gifted science class in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcpalm.com\/news\/2009\/mar\/28\/letter-district-fails-students-cutting-gifted-scie\/\">a good letter to the editor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I am an eighth-grade student at Gifford Middle School. I am currently enrolled in the gifted program and have recently been informed of the school district\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s intention to discontinue the gifted subject of science.<\/p>\n<p>I was very distraught when I received this news, having seen my science teacher, Jennie Flynt, cry over the emotional weight that this carried.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8212; A high school junior wants to know <a href=\"http:\/\/itsyourtimes.com\/?q=node\/4338\">what is up with the science FCAT<\/a>. Her peers just &#8220;Christmas treed&#8221; it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When our administrators told us that the science portion of the FCAT only counted to grade our school, several students decided they weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t going to bother showing up. Several more did show up but only because their parents required them; however, they in no way took the test seriously but instead \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Christmas treed\u00e2\u20ac\u009d it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8212; Phil Plait does <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/badastronomy\/2009\/03\/28\/texas-wrapup-yup-doomed\/\">a good summary<\/a> of the Texas science standards situation.
