{"id":931,"date":"2009-03-03T20:43:26","date_gmt":"2009-03-04T01:43:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=931"},"modified":"2009-04-30T20:10:23","modified_gmt":"2009-05-01T00:10:23","slug":"new-science-standards-are-great","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=931","title":{"rendered":"New science standards are great"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A nice, long Tampa Tribune article says that Florida&#8217;s new science standards are <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.tbo.com\/content\/2009\/mar\/03\/teachers-praise-floridas-new-science-standards\/\">getting the job done<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now, as schools put the new standards into action, educators hope the renewed focus on science will launch more students into careers in biology, chemistry, engineering and other science fields.<\/p>\n<p>Even for students who choose a different career path, the problem-solving skills they pick up in science classes will prepare them to compete in what has become a global economy, Austin said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to have critical thinking going on,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Kathy Steiner, director of curriculum and instructional services in Pasco County, said schools find that parents appreciate the focus on science. More schools are holding science nights where parents and children visit the campuses after hours for star parties or other events.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re getting more parents interested and involved in science,&#8221; Steiner said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A nice, long Tampa Tribune article says that Florida&#8217;s new science standards are getting the job done.
