{"id":686,"date":"2008-08-14T08:10:14","date_gmt":"2008-08-14T12:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=686"},"modified":"2008-09-29T14:10:37","modified_gmt":"2008-09-29T18:10:37","slug":"new-york-times-piece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=686","title":{"rendered":"New York Times piece"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a great column in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/08\/13\/opinion\/13judson.html?_r=1&amp;em=&amp;adxnnl=1&amp;oref=slogin&amp;adxnnlx=1218715584-RT83WnN+WO4RhIo7TjBISw\">the New York Times<\/a> that&#8217;s worth printing out and saving for future reference.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In these arguments, evolution is treated as an abstract subject that deals with the age of the earth or how fish first flopped onto land. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s discussed as though it were an optional, quaint and largely irrelevant part of biology. And a common consequence of the arguments is that evolution gets dropped from the curriculum entirely.<\/p>\n<p>This is a travesty.<\/p>\n<p>It is also dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Evolution should be taught \u00e2\u20ac\u201d indeed, it should be central to beginning biology classes \u00e2\u20ac\u201d for at least three reasons.<\/p>\n<p>First, it provides a powerful framework for investigating the world we live in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The second reason for teaching evolution is that the subject is immediately relevant here and now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The third reason to teach evolution is more philosophical.
