It looks like evolution is popping up here and there as voters quiz the various candidates. Collier County school board candidates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naplesnews.com\/news\/2008\/aug\/05\/collier-school-board-candidates-hit-all-hot-topics\/\">had a recent debate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Candidates for Collier County School Board District 2 and District 4 had the opportunity to answer questions during a debate held Tuesday evening at the Naples First Church of the Nazarene by the World Changers, a group dedicated to return patriotism, morality and family values to the American scene.<\/p>\n<p>But even though they were in the house of the Lord, not all of the questions revolved around religion. The questions for the candidates ranged from school choice and accreditation to teaching intelligent design \u00e2\u20ac\u201d which promotes creationism as an alternative to evolution \u00e2\u20ac\u201d in schools and balancing the district\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s budget.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That little teaser in there about intelligent design just left readers hanging. It wasn&#8217;t brought up again in the story. So, I e-mailed the reporter. She responded with: &#8220;Two of the candidates were asked about teaching Intelligent Design in the forum. Both said that they would follow Florida state standards, which does not allow teaching of Intelligent Design. Kathleen Curatolo said she thought that Intelligent Design was a discussion best had at home or in church.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The issue was also brought up in this story: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcpalm.com\/news\/2008\/aug\/06\/state-house-district-81-to-have-dem-primary\/\">State House District 81 to have Democratic primary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For the first time since the seat was created in 1992 there will be a Democrat primary for state House District 81.<\/p>\n<p>Adam Fetterman, 37 of Tequesta, general counsel to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara and also president of the Boys and Girls Club of St. Lucie County, is going up against Bill Ramos, 49, a Jensen Beach mortgage broker who received almost 46 percent of the vote when he ran for the office in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Both view economy as the key issues in the race, with the Everglades cleanup a top priority, are pro-choice on abortion, support the teaching of evolution in school, believe the FCAT should be changed, but differ on growth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Any of you folks out there know of any other races that have mentioned evolution or science education in general?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s the silly season: election year!
