{"id":653,"date":"2008-07-17T21:00:27","date_gmt":"2008-07-18T01:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=653"},"modified":"2008-10-11T10:43:49","modified_gmt":"2008-10-11T14:43:49","slug":"candidates-interesting-answers-to-science-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=653","title":{"rendered":"Candidates&#8217; interesting answers to science question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Florida Today has an article up about candidates running for Florida House Districts 29, 30 and 80 and Senate District 24. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20080716\/NEWS01\/807160334\/1006\">A question about science was asked<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Do you believe in evolution and do you support the right of teachers to incorporate teaching creationism?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>McCarville<\/strong>: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I do believe we should teach science in the science classes and religion in the religion classes.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Poppell<\/strong>: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I believe in creation, intelligent design,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Poppell said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I will not argue with someone who believes in evolution. They know more about their ancestors than I do.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Holton<\/strong>: He believes in the separation of church and state.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I support intelligent design. It is theory-based, and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s something that I support.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tidd<\/strong>: She believes religion should be taught during religious classes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Evolution is not a belief. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a scientific process, and we should teach science in the classroom.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Workman<\/strong>: He believes both creationism and evolution should be taught in school.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I believe in creationism. I believe that the mighty hand of the Lord created the earth and everything on it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abarbanell<\/strong>: He said there are portions of evolution \u00e2\u20ac\u0153that don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make sense to me as a biologist \u00e2\u20ac\u201d again these are theories.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>He said it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s acceptable to teach creationism.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nothing wrong with teaching it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[Edited to add.] I didn&#8217;t have the time to expound on this when I originally wrote this post: The question posed to the candidates is flawed to begin with. What&#8217;s this &#8220;right of teachers&#8221;? My wife is a teacher (and I am studying to become one) and I am not aware of any right of teachers to mention any old nonsense they feel like in the classroom. Their job is to teach the approved curriculum. They certainly don&#8217;t have the &#8220;right&#8221; to teach something that undermines that very curriculum. Correct me if I&#8217;m wrong. Free speech is not an issue in this matter.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, teaching creationism in the public school science classroom, as the question states, has been found to be unconstitutional in multiple court cases. So, we see that the question is flawed on yet another level. What makes the candidates&#8217; responses so much worse then, is that they obviously have no idea that the question is nothing more that an emotional trapdoor. Here we have candidates going with the gut rather than the brain.
