A group of prominent business groups had sounded the alarm a few years ago about the U.S. falling behind other countries in science, technology, engineering and math fields. So, there was a push to increase bachelor’s degrees in those fields, with a goal of doubling such degrees in about 15 years. Now about six years into the effort, the goal is looking a bit out of reach<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In an update to be published Tuesday, the group reports the number of degrees in those fields rose slightly earlier in the decade, citing figures from the years after 2001 that have become available since the first report was published. But the number of degrees has since flattened out at around 225,000 per year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
