{"id":608,"date":"2008-06-13T17:43:07","date_gmt":"2008-06-13T21:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=608"},"modified":"2008-08-07T10:07:28","modified_gmt":"2008-08-07T14:07:28","slug":"bishops-science-center-launch-fair-tools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=608","title":{"rendered":"Bishops, Science Center, launch, fair, tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>==&gt; U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bradenton.com\/331\/story\/672059.html\">issued a statement on embryonic stem cell research <\/a>during their semi-annual conference going on right now in Orlando.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>ORLANDO, Fla. &#8211;The nation&#8217;s Roman Catholic bishops issued a document Friday warning against what they consider the moral dangers of embryonic stem cell research, saying it treats human beings as commodities and reduces procreation to a manufacturing process.<\/p>\n<p>With elections looming this fall, the bishops said they are not asking Catholics or the public to choose between science and religion. Instead, they are urging people to examine how society should conduct medical research.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some folks are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/services\/newspaper\/printedition\/friday\/opinion\/orl-catholic1308jun13,0,470261.story\">speaking out against that decision<\/a>, though.<\/p>\n<p>==&gt; Brian Tonner of the Orlando Science Center had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/news\/opinion\/views\/orl-myword13a08jun13,0,2282565.story\">&#8220;My Word&#8221; opinion piece published <\/a>in the Orlando Sentinel.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There&#8217;s an important, powerful message in the recently published science FCAT results for schools in our region. Whether you consider the scores for the state, or for individual counties, the story is the same. Scores on the science FCAT are well below 50 percent competency at all grade levels, and even more striking, they get worse as the students move from grade five, to grade eight, to grade 11.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But I guess that was a going away speech of sorts. <a href=\"http:\/\/orlando.bizjournals.com\/orlando\/stories\/2008\/06\/09\/daily55.html?jst=b_ln_hl\">Tonner is resigning <\/a>as the Science Center&#8217;s president and CEO.<\/p>\n<p>==&gt; Here&#8217;s a nice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/GLAST\/launch\/gallery-index.html\">set of photos showing GLAST <\/a>(Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope) being prepared and launched earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>==&gt; In these tough economic times schools are slicing and dicing budgets to make ends meet. But when the Hernando County School Board discovered that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/k12\/article621802.ece\">all-county elementary science fair was a casualty<\/a>, they said they would prefer that it be slipped back in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;A Bag Of Tools&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nIsn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t it strange<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 That princes and kings,<br \/>\nAnd clowns that caper<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 In sawdust rings,<br \/>\nAnd common people<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Like you and me<br \/>\nAre builders for eternity?<\/p>\n<p>Each is given a bag of tools,<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 A shapeless mass,<br \/>\nA book of rules;<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 And each must make\u00e2\u20ac\u201d<br \/>\nEre life is flown\u00e2\u20ac\u201d<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 A stumbling block<br \/>\nOr a steppingstone.<br \/>\n&#8212; R.L.
