{"id":549,"date":"2008-04-17T06:31:39","date_gmt":"2008-04-17T10:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=549"},"modified":"2008-08-31T16:23:42","modified_gmt":"2008-08-31T20:23:42","slug":"a-snarky-bit-of-reason","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=549","title":{"rendered":"A snarky bit of reason"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fred Grimm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/418\/story\/498826.html\">has a column<\/a> in the Miami Herald that takes Florida&#8217;s anti-science legislators to task.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span class=\"dropcap-large\">F<\/span><\/strong>ive years ago, the Florida Legislature was duped into putting up $310 million to lure the Scripps Research Institute to Palm Beach County.<\/p>\n<p>Our cracker politicians were misled by promises that Scripps&#8217; biomedical research would be just the ticket to keep Florida from devolving into a low-skilled, low-tech, low-paid, know-nothing backwater.<\/p>\n<p>Can&#8217;t blame &#8217;em. Jeb Bush himself was ballyhooing the deal. &#8221;A defining moment in Florida&#8217;s future,&#8221; the governor said.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody explained to our hoodwinked legislators that those Scripps fellows were nothing but a bunch of damn evolutionists.<\/p>\n<p>That stuff those scientists do: tearing apart molecules, studying cellular biology and immunology and neurosciences and chemistry, hunting down cures for cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases &#8212; all of that&#8217;s based on godless evolution.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fred Grimm has a column in the Miami Herald that takes Florida&#8217;s anti-science legislators to task.
