{"id":513,"date":"2008-03-24T19:05:52","date_gmt":"2008-03-25T00:05:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=513"},"modified":"2008-08-31T16:38:31","modified_gmt":"2008-08-31T20:38:31","slug":"how-will-the-senate-committee-meeting-shake-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=513","title":{"rendered":"How will the Senate committee meeting shake out?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The St. Petersburg Times education blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.tampabay.com\/schools\/2008\/03\/storms-bills-he.html\">The Gradebook<\/a>, wonders how Wednesday&#8217;s Senate education committee meeting will go with Senator Storms&#8217; &#8220;academic freedom&#8221; bill on the schedule.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The committee has seven members \u00e2\u20ac\u201c four Republicans and three Democrats \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and one of the Republicans, Sen. Stephen Wise, R-Jacksonville, is co-sponsoring Storms&#8217; bill. Two members \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Chairman Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, and Sen. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami \u00e2\u20ac\u201c have commented about the issue, but not enough to comfortably predict how they will vote. As for the other four, who knows?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The blog then links to an<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/politics\/state\/article416362.ece\"> earlier news story<\/a> that quotes the committee chair.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sen. Don Gaetz, the Panhandle Republican who chairs the K-12 committee, said he will most likely schedule Storms&#8217; bill for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had hoped the Board of Education would resolve the scientific standards, but obviously the pot is still boiling,&#8221; said Gaetz, former Okaloosa school superintendent.<\/p>\n<p>Still, he is cautious.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just hope we don&#8217;t have the second rendition of the Scopes Monkey trial,&#8221; said Gaetz, a self-described Christian, &#8220;I don&#8217;t think her bill does that. If she wants to truly encourage discussion and debate, then I can be supportive.
