Definitely worth taking a few minutes to read.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The committee has spoken. Now it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the Florida public\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s turn\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand, when it comes to evolution, there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a lot to say.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The newly proposed Florida standards demand that students understand many aspects of evolution, including how evidence for evolution appears in the fossil record, embryology, molecular biology, and other areas; how humans evolved from early ancestors over millions of years; and how evolution is guided by natural selection.<\/p>\n<p>Brian McClain, a high school biology teacher and a member of the committee, said he heard a few of its members suggest presenting a more critical view of evolution in the standards. But the consensus was that doing so would undermine the document\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s scientific legitimacy, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Not discussing evolution \u00e2\u20ac\u0153would be comparable to teaching earth science without talking about plate tectonics, or chemistry without the periodic table,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Mr. McClain, who teaches at Amos P. Godby High School, in Tallahassee. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It just has to be there.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In an early count of online comments submitted so far, a majority of respondents agreed with how evolution was presented in individual Florida benchmarks. But the responses, not surprisingly, also reveal sharp divisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Excellent benchmark,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d one commenter wrote of an benchmark about evidence for evolution.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Do some research of creation science,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d another countered. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Evolution \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcfacts\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 have been disproven.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Education Week published a story about the new draft of Florida science standards.
