Here’s the first public comment Sen. Dennis Baxley has made concerning the\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Florida Student and School Personnel Religious Liberties Act\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he and Rep. Kim Daniels filed in their respective chambers:\u00c2\u00a0Florida Senate to consider public school \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcreligious liberties\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 bill<\/a><\/p>\n

The bill would allow religious clothing and jewelry. It would also allow \u00e2\u20ac\u0153religious expression\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in coursework<\/strong>, and also allow for prayer groups and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153religious gatherings\u00e2\u20ac\u009d that could be organized at any time a commensurate (and undefined) secular activity is permitted, including during the school day.<\/p>\n

When we pointed out that the broad definition of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153religious expression\u00e2\u20ac\u009d left an opening for an anti-American strain of Islam, Baxley noted that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153religious liberty does run that risk factor.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

To that end, Baxley said that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153more safeguards\u00e2\u20ac\u009d may be needed. These would be worked out in the committee and amendment process, he suggested.<\/p>\n

The potential pitfalls, Baxley suggested, are outweighed by the benefits, such as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153free religious speech\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153expression of faith.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The bill leads [us] in a good direction,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Baxley said, though clearly there is room for refinement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
