{"id":1991,"date":"2014-01-28T21:23:48","date_gmt":"2014-01-29T01:23:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=1991"},"modified":"2014-06-22T17:08:42","modified_gmt":"2014-06-22T21:08:42","slug":"teaching-creationism-is-rife-in-florida-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=1991","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Creationism is Rife in Florida Schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Twelve days ago activist Zack Kopplin wrote<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/health_and_science\/science\/2014\/01\/creationism_in_texas_public_schools_undermining_the_charter_movement.single.html\"> a long piece for <em>Slate <\/em><\/a>about how Texas\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153charter schools\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (special schools that are supported by state money), particularly those using the Responsive Education Solutions system, are openly teaching\u00c2\u00a0 creationism. It is, of course, illegal to teach creationism in public schools, for it violates the First Amendment mandating the separation of church and state. Court after court has supported this stand,the most recent being the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kitzmiller_v._Dover_Area_School_District\">Tammy Kitzmiller,et al v Dover Area School Board in 2005<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/health_and_science\/science\/2014\/01\/creationism_in_public_schools_mapped_where_tax_money_supports_alternatives.html\">Slate has published a complementary map<\/a> showing where in the U.S. publicly-funded schools\u00c2\u00a0 teach creationism and guess what folks? Florida is one of the worst.<\/p>\n<p>At least 164 schools in our <a href=\"http:\/\/creationistvouchers.com\/2012\/11\/30\/creationist-voucher-schools-in-florida\/\">state of Florida<\/a> \u00c2\u00a0are teaching creationism while participating in the state\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tax credit scholarship programs for disabled children and children from low-income families.These include private religious schools and many charter schools, all receiving public funded money,many\u00c2\u00a0through Florida&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0school voucher programs. These bastions of scientific\u00c2\u00a0education, freely express their intensions in statements of learning, such as in\u00c2\u00a0this one\u00c2\u00a0from\u00c2\u00a0the First Baptist Academy of Jacksonville, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153In Science, our teachers seek to help students learn how to use\u00c2\u00a0God&#8217;s wisdom and discernment to expose the false information that the world teaches, and reinforce the Truth of Creation and the Creator found in God\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Word the Bible.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d So much for teaching &#8220;both sides&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is a major problem to the academic integrity of our state and I&#8217;m certain that this issue will be seriously addressed at our AGM next month.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><b><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twelve days ago activist Zack Kopplin wrote a long piece for Slate about how Texas\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153charter schools\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (special schools that are supported by state money), particularly those using the Responsive Education Solutions system, are openly teaching\u00c2\u00a0 creationism.
