{"id":193,"date":"2007-04-12T17:26:36","date_gmt":"2007-04-12T21:26:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=193"},"modified":"2008-08-05T12:47:19","modified_gmt":"2008-08-05T16:47:19","slug":"not-speaking-the-same-language","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=193","title":{"rendered":"Not speaking the same language"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, an AP\u00c2\u00a0story about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bradenton.com\/mld\/bradenton\/news\/breaking_news\/17062417.htm\">Pope laying the smackdown on evolution<\/a> appears in the Bradenton Herald yesterday.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Benedict said,] &#8220;But it is also true that the theory of evolution is not a complete, scientifically proven theory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Benedict added that the immense time span that evolution covers made it impossible to conduct experiments in a controlled environment to finally verify or disprove the theory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We cannot haul 10,000 generations into the laboratory,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bradenton.com\/mld\/bradenton\/news\/breaking_news\/17067573.htm\">another AP story appears<\/a> in the Bradenton Herald today. Ummmm, yea &#8230;\u00c2\u00a0does the Pope have any clue what he&#8217;s talking about when it comes to science?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Researchers have decoded genetic material from a 68 million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex, an unprecedented step once thought impossible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most people believe that birds evolved from dinosaurs, but that&#8217;s all based on the architecture of the bones,&#8221; said Asara. &#8220;This allows you to get the chance to say, &#8216;Wait, they really are related because their sequences are related.&#8217; We didn&#8217;t get enough sequences to definitively say that, but what sequences we got support that idea.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fact that we are getting proteins is very, very exciting,&#8221; said John Horner of Montana State University and the Museum of the Rockies.<\/p>\n<p>And, he added, it &#8220;changes the idea that birds and dinosaurs are related from a hypothesis to a theory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To scientists that&#8217;s a big deal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, an AP\u00c2\u00a0story about the Pope laying the smackdown on evolution appears in the Bradenton Herald yesterday.
