{"id":1734,"date":"2012-11-09T17:11:12","date_gmt":"2012-11-09T21:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=1734"},"modified":"2012-11-09T14:56:36","modified_gmt":"2012-11-09T18:56:36","slug":"bennetts-background","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=1734","title":{"rendered":"Bennett&#8217;s background"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been some buzz about Indiana\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s outgoing state superintendent Tony Bennett being recruited to make a move to the Sunshine State for a job as our education commissioner (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/blogs\/gradebook\/content\/might-indiana-superintendent-stunner-yield-florida-commissioner-candidate\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.orlandosentinel.com\/news_education_edblog\/2012\/11\/does-tony-bennett-want-fls-top-school-job-perhaps-and-he-gets-the-speculation-it-seems.html\">here<\/a>). It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s still just conjecture at this point, but why not highlight a thing or two from his past that might have some relevance to us here at Florida Citizens for Science?<\/p>\n<p>He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a former science teacher. But he got briefly wrapped up in a mini-controversy when <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/evolutionblog\/2009\/06\/30\/why-its-good-to-know-the-subje\/\">he agreed to be a speaker at a Creation Evidence Expo<\/a> in 2009. He quickly canceled his appearance, saying that he hadn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t been aware of what the conference was all about.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also nonchalant about where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idsnews.com\/news\/story.aspx?id=83250\">school voucher money can wind up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When asked by a member of the audience what Bennett thought about using tax dollars to send children to schools that do not teach evolution and use an ideological standpoint to teach history, Bennett said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Honestly, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m agnostic about the type of schools our children attend.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been some buzz about Indiana\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s outgoing state superintendent Tony Bennett being recruited to make a move to the Sunshine State for a job as our education commissioner (see here and here).
