{"id":1629,"date":"2012-07-20T20:17:21","date_gmt":"2012-07-21T00:17:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=1629"},"modified":"2012-07-20T20:17:21","modified_gmt":"2012-07-21T00:17:21","slug":"campaign-websites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=1629","title":{"rendered":"Campaign websites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Terry Kemple, a current candidate running for a seat on the Hillsborough County School Board, was a very vocal <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.tbo.com\/news\/opinion\/2008\/mar\/28\/na-whats-the-fuss-about-evolution-ar-135374\/\">antievolution advocate<\/a> during the 2008 Florida science standards fight and subsequent &#8220;academic freedom&#8221; bills fight in the state legislature. He then tried to get onto the Hillsborough County School Board in 2010 but lost. He&#8217;s trying again, but he&#8217;s fighting some negative publicity on the interwebs: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/k12\/website-spoofs-hillsborough-school-board-candidate\/1241238\">Website spoofs Hillsborough School Board candidate<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Kemple, a conservative Christian activist who is one of six candidates for the countywide District 7 seat, declared verbal war Thursday on whoever created the parody website and renewed the domain name through 2014.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The parody website is <a href=\"http:\/\/vote4kemple.com\/\">vote4kemple.com<\/a>, which I&#8217;m proud to say has a link back to the Florida Citizens for Science blog.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Another website that, sadly, is not a parody is that of Alachua County School Board <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jodiwood.info\/\">candidate Jodie Wood<\/a>. Take a look at his Platform Issues.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Issue:\u00c2\u00a0 Evolution, creationism, intelligent design?<\/p>\n<p>Many of those who know me are aware of my strong dedication to the Christian faith.\u00c2\u00a0 This has resulted in me being asked my opinion on creationism being taught in public schools.\u00c2\u00a0 First I would like to say that it is against my belief for religion to be taught in the public system.\u00c2\u00a0 This should be left in the hands of parents, churches, and other non-tax-paid organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, I believe that it is improper for evolutionism to be taught as known fact.\u00c2\u00a0 Darwin in his book \u00e2\u20ac\u0153origin of the species\u00e2\u20ac\u009d referred to such as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153theory\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.\u00c2\u00a0 I believe in scientific evidence.\u00c2\u00a0 Creationism and evolutionism both can be to some extent supported with scientific data\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.<\/p>\n<p>Conclusion:\u00c2\u00a0 Fact should be taught as fact.\u00c2\u00a0 Theory should be taught as theory.\u00c2\u00a0 Religion and other social belief should be left to the community.\u00c2\u00a0 Let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s educate our kids &#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Terry Kemple, a current candidate running for a seat on the Hillsborough County School Board, was a very vocal antievolution advocate during the 2008 Florida science standards fight and subsequent &#8220;academic freedom&#8221; bills fight in the state legislature.
