{"id":1617,"date":"2012-07-14T10:00:38","date_gmt":"2012-07-14T14:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=1617"},"modified":"2012-07-14T10:00:38","modified_gmt":"2012-07-14T14:00:38","slug":"couple-of-interesting-articles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=1617","title":{"rendered":"Couple of interesting articles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First up is an article in the Orlando Sentinel about the implementation of new teacher evaluations, <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.orlandosentinel.com\/2012-07-13\/features\/os-florida-teacher-evaluations-20120713_1_new-teacher-evaluations-evaluation-plan-teacher-merit-pay-law\">Teachers: New evaluation system &#8216;artificial,&#8217; &#8216;frustrating,&#8217; &#8216;humiliating&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>High-school chemistry teacher Steve Fannin was honored recently in Washington, D.C., as one of the nation&#8217;s best math and science educators.<\/p>\n<p>Fannin, a 31-year veteran of Tallahassee schools, has mastery of his subject and &#8220;exemplary&#8221; classroom skills, according to the judges of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.<\/p>\n<p>Yet when Fannin was evaluated under Florida&#8217;s new teacher-assessment system, the results weren&#8217;t so impressive.<\/p>\n<p>A mid-year evaluation identified him as a &#8220;beginning&#8221; teacher.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite the hard-hitting opening, the story gets softer later as some folks feel that the evaluations are a positive tool that will smooth out over time. The apparent problem is that Florida rushed into this new system much too fast without allowing time for training and such.
