{"id":1175,"date":"2010-03-12T07:50:54","date_gmt":"2010-03-12T11:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=1175"},"modified":"2010-03-12T07:50:54","modified_gmt":"2010-03-12T11:50:54","slug":"science-in-the-legislature-and-beyond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=1175","title":{"rendered":"Science in the legislature and beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Florida lawmakers debate on whether to raise graduation requirements and replace some FCATs with end-of-course exams, some very interesting public opinions are popping up. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.orlandosentinel.com\/news_education_edblog\/2010\/03\/is-passing-chemistry-too-much-to-ask-of-floridas-high-school-students.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+SentinelSchoolZone+%28Sentinel+School+Zone%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">For instance<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rocky Hanna, principal of Leon High School in Tallahassee (and speaking, he said, for all that district\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s high school principals), said his colleagues have \u00e2\u20ac\u0153serious concerns.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>They are worried the proposed requirements would hurt graduation rates and the ability of some teenagers to join the military after high school \u00e2\u20ac\u201d because they wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have diplomas.<\/p>\n<p>Expecting all students to pass algebra II or chemistry is just too much, Hanna said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153If I have to pass chemistry, I never would have graduated from high school,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul Cottle already <a href=\"http:\/\/bridgetotomorrow.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/10\/senate-assessmentgraduation-bill-favorably-reported-by-senate-prek-12-committee\/\">tackled that one<\/a>. &#8220;A great teacher is supposed to encourage his students to do better than he did, not use his shortcomings to justify those of his students.&#8221; He then makes <a href=\"http:\/\/bridgetotomorrow.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/11\/rocky-hanna%E2%80%99s-comments-reported-at-school-zone\/\">a good point<\/a>: &#8220;He demonstrated that the legislature must step in to demand excellence because the educational establishment will not do so on its own.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So far, the bills in both the House and Senate are moving along, passing through committees with little problem.<\/p>\n<p>In other science-related news:<\/p>\n<p>Check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridafirstregional.com\/\">robotics competition <\/a>going on this weekend at UCF.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Middle and High school students from nine Central Florida counties will face off Saturday in the 12th annual <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.orlandosentinel.com\/news_education_edblog\/2010\/03\/science-projects-face-off-saturday.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+SentinelSchoolZone+%28Sentinel+School+Zone%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">Orlando Science Center Science Challenge<\/a>.&#8221; Official link <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osc.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=category&amp;layout=blog&amp;id=37&amp;Itemid=41\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students&#8217; perceptions about the Earth&#8217;s age influence their acceptance of human evolution, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.umn.edu\/news\/news-releases\/2010\/UR_CONTENT_180333.html\">University of Minnesota study<\/a> published in the March issue of the journal Evolution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Florida lawmakers debate on whether to raise graduation requirements and replace some FCATs with end-of-course exams, some very interesting public opinions are popping up.
