{"id":1172,"date":"2010-03-07T10:20:24","date_gmt":"2010-03-07T14:20:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=1172"},"modified":"2010-03-07T10:20:24","modified_gmt":"2010-03-07T14:20:24","slug":"and-this-is-not-science-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=1172","title":{"rendered":"And this is not science education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a story <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ciz5i8\">about Christian homeschool science textbooks<\/a> that comes as no surprise, but is still upsetting. &#8220;These books are promulgating lies to kids,&#8221; said Jerry Coyne, an ecology and evolution professor at the University of Chicago.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Those who do not believe that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God will find many points in this book puzzling,&#8221; says the introduction to &#8220;Biology: Third Edition&#8221; from Bob Jones University Press. &#8220;This book was not written for them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Coyne and Virginia Tech biology professor Duncan Porter reviewed excerpts from the Apologia and Bob Jones biology textbooks, which are equivalent to ninth- and 10th-grade biology lessons. Porter said he would give the books an F.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If this is the way kids are home-schooled then they&#8217;re being shortchanged, both rationally and in terms of biology,&#8221; Coyne said.
