{"id":1088,"date":"2009-07-12T11:25:20","date_gmt":"2009-07-12T15:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flascience.org\/wp\/?p=1088"},"modified":"2009-07-12T11:48:54","modified_gmt":"2009-07-12T15:48:54","slug":"tampa-tribune-article-about-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flascience.org\/?p=1088","title":{"rendered":"Tampa Tribune article about workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Tampa Tribune <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.tbo.com\/content\/2009\/jul\/12\/teacher-workshop-focus-controversial-science-topic\/news-breaking\/\">published a story today<\/a> about this week&#8217;s upcoming Controversial Issues Workshop.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Among the groups participating are the National Center for Science Education, Florida Citizens for Science and the Coalition for Science Literacy.<\/p>\n<p>Debra Walker, a Monroe County School Board member who served on the committee that rewrote the state&#8217;s science standards, will discuss &#8220;Top 10 Myths about Teaching Evolution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said working on the science standards, approved in February 2008 by the Florida Board of Education, proved to be an eye opener.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was shocked at how many districts just totally ignored evolution,&#8221; Walker said.<\/p>\n<p>Walker, an archaeologist, said one myth science teachers confront involves Earth&#8217;s age. Some students arrive with the misconception that Earth is just a few thousand years old. Scientists, though, gauge the planet&#8217;s age at about 4.5 billion years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s good to see that the reporter didn&#8217;t try to provide a false &#8220;balance&#8221; by digging up any creationists or some such garbage. I do like how the reporter tied in the recent Pew Research Center poll, though.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the comments readers left with the story are surprisingly positive.
