Your Inner Fish

A new three part series is due to start this coming Wednesday April 9th at 10:pm (EST) on your local Florida PBS station. Neil Shubin will host the series Inner Fish , a TV adaptation, based on Neils best selling book. It took more than 350 million years for the human body to take shape. Inner fish explains how it become the complicated, quirky, amazing machine it is today?  I have had the privilege to meet Neil on several occassions, he is a great guy and I would highly recomend this program.

Thanks Dr Smith I’m really looking forward to watching this(in-between grading papers)
Chris,I would suggest you watch this, but it would be like water on a ducks back.

  2. Michael Suttkus, II says:

“Your Inner Fish” was a great book. Even my sister enjoyed it, and she isn’t a science nerd. I have high hopes for the series.

  3. Jim Hofmann says:

Google Shubin & Colbert for a very funny interview.

  4. Chris says:

Ivorygirl, Hope I don’t miss it, I’m sure this fish story will be quite entertaining. Without a doubt, no one can question the fact that the faith has evolved. From the simplistic imaginations of Erasmus Darwin to the mass fabrication of transitional idols, the pond scum to people cult can be proud of todays suppositions.

  5. Ivorygirl says:

    Chris,
Your mind is crippled by religious presupposition – that biblical text is authoritative, inerrant and directly inspired by Almighty God. You filter everything through that. Anything in the text that is incompatible with science couldn’t mean what it seems to mean. It must mean something else. or nothing at all . Basically you are saying that scientist from many areas of science are all in collusion with some sort of mass conspiracy. I mean really? Do you realize how insane that sounds ?

  6. Ivorygirl says:

Watch the program this morning with a group of other science teachers. We all gave it a thumbs up.

  7. Jonathan Smith says:

    Ivorygirl,

I have to agree with you. The first episode was terrific. A wonderful example of the intersection of paleontology, anatomy, development, genetics and evolution.

  8. Chris says:

    Ivorygirl,

I only nodded out a few times through the fish story. I must say the whale dissection was amazing. Very interesting. The blow hole reminded me of you, just kidding. I did miss this part Johathan mentioned, “Inner fish explains how it became the complicated, quirky, amazing machine it is today”. Did they leave that part out or is it yet to come?

  9. Ivorygirl says:

    Chris,

If you are going to quote Jonathan please try to spell his name correctly?

In 1738 Jonathan Swift in his ‘Polite Conversation’ said, ‘There are none so blind as those who will not see. The most deluded people are those who choose to ignore what they already know’.

  10. Chris says:

    Ivorygirl,

Good quote, I can agree with the Rev. Jonathan Swift !00%.

” According to the ‘Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings’ this proverb has been traced back to 1546 (John Heywood), and resembles the Biblical verse Jeremiah 5:21 (‘Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not’). In 1738 it was used by Jonathan Swift in his ‘Polite Conversation’”

  11. Ivorygirl says:

    Chris,

I was thinking about your comments. Just when are creationists going to make a discovery just as spectacular as Tiktalik or the sonic hedgehog experiments? I’m sure that their “research labs” are just pumping out discoveries every day. I can’t wait to see them! Some film footage of them digging in the ground for fossils would be super, along with some ectopic gene expression studies. Maybe they could show us the blueprints the Hebrew god drew up?

  12. Chris says:

    Ivorygirl,

I’m not sure what a Hebrew god would be. However you’ll be meeting the God identified in the Bible at some point and when you do you can ask Him for His blueprints.

  13. Ivorygirl says:

    Chris,

You know the the god I mean, the one who loves killing and raping and destroying. So I will be meeting this god of the bible at some point? Well I hope your evidence for this is better than the evidence you present for his/her creation of all things.

  14. Chris says:

    Ivorygirl,

Perhaps the god of Koran fits with your assumptions, but not the God of the Bible.

The discovery of the dead extinct fish named Tiktalik fits with the biblical paradigm as is. There is no need to create an imaginary history of how this fish became something other than it always was. Don’t wear yourself out, I doubt creationist will every be able to find the type of imaginary creatures drawn by evolutionist.

  15. Ivorygirl says:

    Chris,

No, I have the right god, read Numbers 31:16-18).

As far as you stating that Tiktaalik is just a fish, I think you must have fallen asleep more than you said during the program. How would explain the fact that Tiktaalik possessed. – Fish gills, scales and fins. Yet, half- fish, half-tetrapod limb bones and joints, including a functional wrist joint for walking. Half-fish, and radiating, fish-like fins instead of toes. A half-fish, half-tetrapod ear region. Tetrapod rib bones, tetrapod mobile neck with separate pectoral girdle and tetrapod lungs?

I would agree with you that creationist will never find a fossil like Tiktaalik because all you do is take the authority of a Bronze Age book. Sounds somewhat intellectually lazy to me

  16. Chris says:

    Ivorygirl,

It does appear that superior intellect or evidence is not the issue with your dead fish, keeping the faith is. Obviously, I don’t have the fortitude to accept the onslaught of imagination transitional creatures proposed by believers. But yourself having the ability to accept everything which supports your world view, regardless of it’s validity, I would think this fishy fish should serve you well.
