Welcome to the Internet home of Florida Citizens for Science. We are a diverse group of concerned parents, educators, employers and just about everything else under the Florida sun united in a common cause. We defend and promote good science, especially in the public school classroom. Our current focus is on defending our new state science standards and helping to implement them across Florida. But we also take an active role in rooting out attempts to undermine our state's future, such as the blatant promtion of anti-scientific ideas, Intelligent Design/Creationsim being the standard one. We've seen how distracting and costly fights can be once anti-science establishes a toe-hold in an area. Headlines in Kansas, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Ohio attest to this. Our self-assigned task is to be vigilant and take action before narrow ideologies get too much traction in Florida. Please consider joining Florida Citizens for Science. We need eyes and ears in every corner of this state. And we need people willing to stand up for sound science in the face of boisterous snake-oil salesmen. Regardless of how much time and effort you are willing to give, we would be happy to welcome you aboard! Antievolution "critical analysis" bill filedFlorida Citizens for Science opposes Senator Stephen Wise's recently filed bill -- SB 1854, Required Instruction in the Public Schools -- as it is clearly unnecessary, harmful to science education, and sends a negative message to science-based industries that would otherwise consider setting up shop in our state. See our full press release, and keep on top of updates at our blog. Raising money for science educationFlorida Citizens for Science launched its third annual fundraising drive to provide needed science supplies to classrooms across Florida. In the previous two years we've helped 20 individual classrooms with $3,282. Let's see how much we can add to that total. See the science education wishes we hope to fulfill this year here. Stick Science Cartoon ContestFlorida Citizens for Science hosted the second annual Stick Science Cartoon Contest. See who the winners are here. Contestants created cartoons using simple stick figures that can be used to educate the general public and especially decision makers (state legislators, school board members) about the truth behind one false science argument.
