Homeschooling. I don’t have a big heartache with it. There are plenty of reasons why parents may want to give their children a different educational experience than what can be found in the public schools. But when I see this (Bradenton Herald article: Home-schooled option gains favor in Florida), I just bang my head against the wall:
“She attends a home-school facility that teaches the A Beka Academy curriculum, where she takes required classes (English, math, science) three days a week.”
A Beka? No. Just no. If you don’t know why I’m discouraged, search their website for biology texts.
This teachable, readable, and memorable book presents the universe as the direct creation of God and refutes the man-made idea of evolution.
“Home-school facility” sounds like a bigger oxymoron than “military intelligence”.
Or does she spend the other four days of the week roaming in the woods, returning to her parents’ house only to wash her clothes and brain?

It might be wise not to say too much about homeschoolers. They usually come out on top.

Not the ones who use the A Beka curriculum, I strongly suspect.
Unless your definition of “top” includes “acceptance at Bob Jones ‘University'”, of course.
Actually Pierce, the sickest part of all this is that even Bob Jones University, that infamous fundamentalist school in South Carolina that teaches young-earth creationism, finds that A Beka’s and the ACE ( another home school curriculum) so deficient that it can’t even prepare students for that mockery of a University.
Educators at Bob Jones University also criticized A Beka’s academics, saying “The curricula failed to adequately educate their students academically or spiritually by neglecting … higher-order thinking skills.â€
Pierce,
There is a nice article on Charter Schools that you all might want to read, it also mentions home schooling. http://www.salon.com/2013/10/25/christian_textbooks_darwin_inspired_hitler/
Even Bee Jay You can’t swing with A Beka?!?
What “higher ed” “schools” can the victims of this curriculum attend, if any?
