Astrobiology The Search for Extraterrestrial Life

For those of you that are in the Lakeland area and have a free couple of hours to spare,I will be speaking at the  Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lakeland, 3140 Troy Ave Lakeland Fl, on Sunday the 21st of April 1.30 pm.  The talk ” The Search for Extraterrestrial Life” will cover quite a few topics including, what life as we know it is, how to look for life in our own solar system and how we search for life in other areas of the Universe. I have just finished a 15 week course from the University of Edinburgh and found the topic fascinating,I hope those who attend will feel the same.

    Jonathan,

I live too far away to attend your talk but I was very interested in the course you had taken in Astrobiology. Can you give me more info?

  2. Jonathan Smith says:

    Ivorygirl,
Sorry you can’t make it to my talk. The course I just completed was a on line course from the UK Centre for Astrobiology University of Edinburgh, conducted by Charles Cockell who is considered one of the world’s leading Astrobiologists.
The course was free (always a plus) and covered a broad range of subjects including, physics, biology, chemistry and social sciences. There were no prerequisites for the course. However, the course was conducted at the level expected of advanced undergraduate students, or graduate students. I’m not sure if they plan to repeat the course, but I did hear that an advanced class may be in the future.

Ivorygirl, BTW at the risk of seeming to brag I passed the course with Distinction (over 82.5 % in the written exams)

  4. Ivorygirl says:

Thanks Jonathan and congrats on the distinction,if the advanced course comes along would you please keep us informed?
