Six weeks of ID lectures?!

A church in Sarasota is offering classes every Thursday morning and evening for six weeks on the subject of Intelligent Design. What in the world is there to talk about in so many classes? I would think a single, brief class would do it.

Intelligent Design II – New evidence supporting the existence of a master intelligence, a designer of all that exists, is the subject of this series of lecture-films. These classes, taught by Dr. Charles Axton, will begin this Thursday, 27 September, and continue through 25 October. Classes include video screenings, lecture, and lively discussion, with topics including “Icons on Evolution” and “Darwin’s Dilemma.” There will be morning (10:30-noon) and evening (6:30-8:00) sessions, meeting in Gillespie Hall. To sign up e-mail Dr. Charles B. Axton, cba-bla@comcast.net, or just show up. All lecture information will be sent by e-mail (there will be no printed hand-outs). Please note that one can create one’s own personal e-mail at the public library.

[edited to add:] Here, Neil deGrasse Tyson teaches all you need to know about ID in five minutes.

Brandon “What in the world is there to talk about in so many classes? I would think a single, brief class would do it.” It only takes a second to say Goddidit.

  2. Chris says:

I’d have to disagree, there is no sign here Tyson can recognize intelligence. The idea he knows how everything should have been made is pretty funny, while he confirms the Bible with his observation that life and the universe is temporary by design.

  3. Ivorygirl says:

So Chris, your bible confirms the universe is temporary. Can you explain (Psalm 104:5) – “He established the earth upon its foundations, So that it will not totter forever and ever.” and (Ecclesiastes 1:4) – “A generation goes and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever.” Which is it, temporary or forever? Oh and tell us once again how we can scientifically test how the God of the bible is the Intelligent Designer?

  4. Chris says:

    Ivorygirl
Sure, here are those scriptures in context.

    http://carm.org/bible-difficulties/job-song-solomon/does-earth-abide-forever-or-not

Why don’t you show us how you can scientifically test to prove the God of the bible is not the intelligent designer.

  5. Ivorygirl says:

Chris, That’s the context I see in the bible scriptures I quoted, so who’s to say that the person you quoted opinion is any more valid than mine, or the guy that delivers my pizza. That’s the problem with your holy book; it’s always open to any ones interpretation or personal biases (you know, like yours). Did you really say “Why don’t you show us how you can scientifically test to prove the God of the bible is not the intelligent designer?” Once again your ignorance shines like a beacon; you obviously have no understanding of logic or reason. Go read Copi’s Introduction to Logic and Informal Logic and then maybe you might work out how dumb your question really is. Let me give you a clue. “In many circumstances it can be safely assumed that if a certain event had occurred (your magic sky God creating ex-nihilo) evidence of it could be discovered by qualified investigators. (It hasn’t, not a single shred) In these circumstances it is only reasonable to take the absence of proof of its occurrence as positive proof of its non-occurrence.” The burden of proof is on you Chris and we all know you just don’t have any

  6. Pierce R. Butler says:

    New evidence …

Somehow I doubt the standard definitions of either of those words would apply to the content of these classes.

  7. Chris says:

    Ivorygirl

I don’t know that the Bible attempts to prove the existence of God. His existence is obvious to me The Bible does say, “The fool has said in his heart, There is no God,” Psalm 53″1 and Romans 1;20 says, “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.”

The bottom line here is, I believe and trust in the God of the Bible. You believe and trust in a man made god called evolution. That’s pretty much it.

  8. Chris says:

    Pierce R. Butler

Will you be going to these classes to see if there is new evidence?

  9. Pierce R. Butler says:

    Chris –

Nah. I’ll wait until Axton gets his paper(s) published in a solid peer-reviewed scientific journal.

To which I will then subscribe through the special plan in which it is delivered by flying pig.

  10. Chris says:

    Pierce

Ha ha, that sounds like a plan. Good luck with that.

  11. Ivorygirl says:

Sure Chris, Anyone who is brain-washed by a text from a book written thousands of years ago that’s loaded with inconsistencies and contradictions have a lot of room to talk about who is a fool. I case you haven’t discovered it yet, we think with our brains not our hearts. Let me re write your last paragraph for you

“The bottom line here is, I mindlessly put faith and trust in an improvable, invisible sky God of a three thousand year old book written by primitive goat herders. You accept the scientifically provable theory of evolution that’s supported by a mountain of evidence. That’s pretty much it.

    There all fixed.

  12. Chris says:

Ivorygirl, You have a way of confirming scripture with almost every thing you say. Thanks.
Mind and heart are somewhat interchangeable in context. Also heart an spirit may have the same meaning.

Being a natural man, the book says you’re not going to understand the things of God because you are spiritually dead. Of course that contradicts your world view which is more about believing than thinking. But here is a few things to ponder.

Corinthians 2:14 – But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Perhaps this will help you understand what you don’t understand.

  13. Ivorygirl says:

Chris, No thanks necessary, but I’m sure you don’t need me to confirm your acceptance of the Bronze Age diatribe of a group of Mid Eastern desert dwellers. In case you missed the clue (my name) I’m not a man and I’m fully aware that it makes me less of a person in your book.
You spew out your scriptures like they have an ounce of authority, they don’t and you don’t either. In fact the best you can have is partial Biblical authority since there are parts of the bible that contain errors which obviously cannot be authoritative. Remember what the religious reformer, John Wesley, said: “If there be any mistakes in the Bible, there may as well be a thousand. If there be one falsehood in that book, it did not come from the God of truth.” So where lays the basis to pronounce me “spiritually dead?
To accuse me of not thinking is such a misnomer, considering your ideology comes only from blind faith.
What I don’t understand is, why people like you, visit a science web site to regurgitate creationist clap –trap in the disguise of a genuine argument, when your real intentions are to propagate your very narrow religious ideologies?

  14. Chris says:

Ivorygirl, Once again you’re far from right suggesting I’m here to evangelize sinners. If someone should choose to test the bible due to our conversation without atheist propaganda, then good for them. Initially my interest lies in learning of the proposed step from micro to macro evolution. After many years of searching for the acclaimed process which is said to fit the scientific method, I’ve come to the conclusion that the claim that all life has arisen from a single living source can be proven to be true with imaginary phylogenic drawings, hypothetical time lines and blind faith. With the reality that so much of evolutionary science is so obviously a farce, I find it incredible that anyone could accept macro-evolution’s story as true for the origin of mankind.

But you are right that the path to the salvation offered in the bible is very narrow, yet simple and free to all. The Bible is either true or false. If the book is false then it falls into the large bundle bogus beliefs and it really doesn’t matter if you want to believe your related to a pigs tooth or a chimpanzee part. But if it is true and all other acclaimed revelations are false we have a lot to look forward to. When your body dies you don’t and you’ll live forever in one of two places. If thats not true it doesn’t matter, you’ll find out for sure when you die.

Funny you should mention John Wesley His lifelong study of the scriptures in the original languages of Latin, Greek an Hebrew produced his belief that there are no mistakes in the Bible, The quote you provided confirms his findings. “If there be any mistakes in the Bible, there may as well be a thousand. If there be one falsehood in that book, it did not come from the God of truth.” You have suggested several mistakes, but none have been shown to be factuall. Even your last babble that you’re not a man is silly. As you know mankind is the meaning,

Wesley also said that “without the Spirit, the Word is a dead letter, and without the Word. the Spirit flutters as an illusion.”

  15. Aufwuch says:

Ivorygirl, I’m sure you are aware Chris is was too gone in delusion to recover at this time. You just give him the opportunity to pound his chest (heart) and have his weeny flutter. Or is it the other way around. I apologize, could not help myself.

  16. Lew says:

I didn’t see the syllabus at the course website. Any other clues as to the course content?

  17. Ivorygirl says:

Aufwuch, Chris is a mindless, compulsive liar for Jesus, who thinks his religious diatribe will earn him credits with his invisible Bronze Age sky daddy. It’s rather pathetic really.
